Context

MSA or Measurement System Analysis stands for “Measurement System Analysis”.

The “MSA basics” module is an e-learning course designed to help you discover the different sources of variation in a measurement system. It will enable you to identify the actions to be taken to improve the reliability of your measurements.

You wish to :

  • Refresh your skills before practising MSA.
  • Learn the basics in order to better understand your next MSA training session.
  • Implement the MSA in your company.
  • To meet a requirement of a quality standard.

If your company belongs to the automotive sector, you can introduce one of the 5 Core Tools to your internal auditors, in accordance with requirement 7.2.3 d) of the IATF 16949: 2016 standard.

Objectives

In 45 minutes, the “MSA basics” e-learning module enables the learner to :

  • Understand the different sources of variation in a measurement system.
  • Conduct a continuous R&R study and interpret the results.
  • Conduct an attribute R&R study and interpret the results.

The learner will be introduced to the basic concepts associated with MSA: sources of variation, precision and accuracy of a measurement system, repeatability and reproducibility, R&R for continuous and attribute measurements, validity criteria of a measurement system.

Recommanded for

Any public wishing to acquire basic knowledge of the MSA.

  • This module is structured in 3 learning sequences.
  • Each sequence leads you to carry out interactive activities, integrate new knowledge, and benefit from the contribution of experts who will indicate the pitfalls to avoid.
  • A downloadable summary document is available to the learner.

Introduction and instructions for the learner.

Session 1

Understanding the different sources of variation in a measuring system:

  • Activity to become aware of the different sources of variation categorising using the Ishikawa diagram.
  • Discover the components of measurement variation: accuracy and precision.
  • Viewing of 2 videos on the pitfalls to avoid.
  • Test of knowledge.
Session 2

Conduct a continuous R&R study and interpret the results:

  • How to carry out a continuous R&R study.
  • How to interpret the results of the continuous R&R study.
  • The 6 values obtained and how to interpret them.
  • Viewing of 2 videos on the pitfalls to avoid.
  • Test of knowledge.
Session 3

Conducting an attribute R&R study and interpreting the results:

  • Awareness activity that a visual inspection is subject to interpretation.
  • The procedure to be applied to carry out an attribute R&R study.
  • Knowing how to interpret the results of the attribute R&R study.
  • Viewing of 2 videos on the pitfalls to avoid.
