MASTER BLACK BELT: Training and individual qualification #125
Context
You are a certified Black Belt (see § Prerequisites) and would like to become the company’s Master Black Belt, who will be responsible for :
- Training YBs, GBs, BBs and Champions, and continuously improving the company’s Lean & Six Sigma training programmes and materials.
- Identifying potential new Lean Six Sigma projects and presenting them to the management committee.
- Support Green Belts, Black Belts and Champions in carrying out their Lean & Six Sigma projects.
Objectives
- Be able to identify potential Lean & Six Sigma projects and propose them to management.
- Develop the teaching skills to become an internal trainer, which means knowing how to explain complex things in a simple way, and knowing how to put yourself within the reach of your audience.
- Know how to act as a coach, i.e. :
- supporting GBs, BBs and Champions in applying the DMAIC or DFSS approach and the associated tools.
- know how to detect drift during the course of a project, propose solutions and help the coachee to achieve the objectives set.

Be qualified as a Master Black Belt.
Recommanded for
- Black Belt with leadership, decision-making, delegation and empathy skills, a high degree of autonomy and a good understanding of hierarchical relations.
Prerequisites
- Be Black-Belt certified, i.e. have successfully completed at least 20 days of level BB training, validated by an examination.
- Have carried out at least 3 6 sigma projects using the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) or DMADV (Define-Measure-Analyze-Design-Verify) approach.
- Have carried out at least 1 6 sigma project involving the coaching of GBs or BBs, over a wide area, with a significant impact on the company’s KPIs.

Statistical skills are assessed on the basis of a case study using Minitab (or other software).
The trainer analyses the results, then during a session explains the answers, and identifies any additional points for statistical reinforcement, which may give rise to a specific additional offer.

- Top-Down and Bottom-Up approach to selecting projects and their link with strategy.
- Selling a Lean 6 sigma project to management and criteria for choosing a Lean 6 sigma project.
- Criteria for selecting GB/BBs and Lean 6 sigma teams.
- Project scope, resources and formalisation: the project charter and contract.
- Identifying the risks of a Lean 6 sigma project.
Duration: 1 day
1st stage (0.5 day): theoretical reinforcement
- The essential qualities of a trainer.
- Leading a presentation.
- Dynamic training using active teaching methods.
- The 3 key points for successful teaching.
- The different ways of selecting participants for a Lean 6 Sigma project.
- Managing specific cases.
2nd stage (0.5 day): role-playing in a moderation situation
- The candidate leads part of his/her own GB or BB training course, on the following topics :
project management tools,
statistical tools with exercises on Minitab (Excel or other software),
With the candidate’s agreement, the presentation may be filmed, in order to raise awareness of the areas where progress needs to be made, as well as the strong points.
The presenter will help the trainee to identify areas for improvement in :
- the content of the presentation
- the teaching methods used (content and form).
At the end of this section, the trainee completes his/her Personal Progress Action Plan (PPP), and identifies how to apply in concrete terms the concepts and tools seen in this section.
Duration: 0.5 days
- Feedback as a Black Belt, support in managing a Green Belt project: successes and difficulties encountered.
- The role of a project coach.
- The specific qualities of a project coach and self-assessment.
- The role of the Master Black Belt at each stage of the DMAIC process.
- Problems at each DMAIC stage and how to overcome them.
- DMAIC milestones.
At the end of this part, the trainee completes his/her Personal Progress Action Plan (PPP), and identifies how to apply the concepts and tools seen in this part in concrete terms.
Duration: 0.5 days
During an intersessional period (approximately 2 months), the candidate applies his/her personal progress plan. During this intersession, the trainer remains available remotely (by telephone and/or e-mail) to answer any questions or difficulties in implementing the plan.
Feedback is provided on the implementation of the Personal Progress Plan, and the trainer provides reinforcement to help overcome any difficulties encountered.

The Master Black Belt qualification is awarded following a final assessment during practical application in a real-life situation, on the following two topics:
- project coaching: ½ day assessment
- training: ½ day assessment
