MASTER BLACK BELT: Training and individual qualification #125
Context
2 options :
- 4 days: Training only.
- 6 days: Training (4 days) + Qualification (2 days).
You want to develop the skills of a Black Belt to become the company’s Master Black Belt, who will be responsible for :
- Training YBs, GBs, BBs and Champions, and continuously improving the company’s Lean & Six Sigma training programmes and materials.
- Identifying potential new Lean Six Sigma projects and presenting them to the management committee.
- Support Green Belts, Black Belts and Champions in carrying out their Lean & Six Sigma projects.
You are looking to qualify as a Master Black Belt after putting the training into practice.
Objectives
- Be able to identify potential Lean & Six Sigma projects and propose them to management.
- Develop the teaching skills to become an internal trainer, which means knowing how to explain complex things in a simple way, and knowing how to put yourself within the reach of your audience.
- Know how to act as a coach, i.e. :
- supporting GBs, BBs and Champions in applying the DMAIC or DFSS approach and the associated tools.
- know how to detect drift during the course of a project, propose solutions and help the coachee to achieve the objectives set.

Be qualified as a Master Black Belt.
Recommanded for
- Black Belt with leadership, decision-making, delegation and empathy skills, a high degree of autonomy and a good understanding of hierarchical relations.
Prerequisites
- Be Black-Belt certified, i.e. have successfully completed at least 20 days of level BB training, validated by an examination.
- Have carried out at least 3 6 sigma projects using the DMAIC (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control) or DMADV (Define-Measure-Analyze-Design-Verify) approach.
- Have carried out at least 1 6 sigma project involving the coaching of GBs or BBs, over a wide area, with a significant impact on the company’s KPIs.

- The qualification part can be optional.
Validation of prior learning: the Master Black Belt qualification is awarded following an audit of the practical application on site:
- Participation in a Ā½ day project coaching session for assessment purposes.
- Participation in 1 day of training for assessment purposes.

Strengthening skills in the selection of 6 sigma projects and teams:

- Choice of parts of the GB or BB course for training purposes; this choice will be based on extracts from the company’s own training, on the following themes
- project management tools,
- statistical tools with exercises on Minitab or Excel,
- sub-group exercises.
For each part:
- Role-playing: the trainee is filmed, which then enables the trainee to become more aware of the areas for improvement that need to be reinforced, as well as his or her strengths.
- Identification of areas for improvement in the existing presentation guide.
- Reinforcement of the pedagogical approach, taking care to use the 3A model.
- Practising the selected changes to the presentation. The trainer assists the trainee in identifying areas for improvement in the content and form of the presentation. At the end of this part, the trainee completes his/her Personal Progress Action Plan (PPP), and identifies how to apply in practice the concepts and tools seen in this part.
Strengthening project coaching skills.
- Feedback from experience as a Black Belt, support in managing a Green Belt project: successes and difficulties encountered.
- The role of a project coach.
- The specific qualities of a project coach and self-assessment.
- The main types of problem in a project and courses of action.
- DMAIC milestones: the role of the Master Black Belt at each stage.
- Problems at each of the DMAIC stages and how to overcome them.
At the end of this section, the trainee completes his/her Personal Progress Action Plan (PPP), and identifies how to apply the concepts and tools seen in this section in concrete terms.
Pathway to further qualification: 2 days :
Open session (1 to 2 months) : Practical application in the company. During this intersessional period, the trainer remains available to the trainee online (telephone, e-mail), to answer any questions or resolve any difficulties with the application.
Feedback :
- Feedback on the application of the Personal Progress Plan.
- Reinforcement by the trainer to help overcome any difficulties encountered.
Master Black Belt qualification :
This qualification is awarded following an audit of on-site implementation:
- Participation in Ā½ day of project coaching for assessment purposes.
- Participation in 1 day of training for assessment purposes.
